Before a drug is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it must display each safety and effectiveness. However, the FDA doesn’t require an understanding of a drug’s mechanism of motion for approval. This acceptance of results without explanation raises the query of whether the “black box” decision-making technique of a secure and effective artificial intelligence model must be fully explained as a way to receive FDA approval.

This topic was considered one of many discussion points raised through the event on Monday, December 4th MIT Abdul Latif Jameel Machine Learning in Healthcare Clinic (Jameel Clinic) AI and Health Regulatory Policy Conference, which sparked quite a lot of discussions and debates amongst teachers; US, EU and Nigerian regulators; and industry experts on regulating AI in healthcare.

As machine learning continues to advance rapidly, uncertainty stays as as to whether regulators can sustain and still reduce the likelihood of harmful impacts, while ensuring that their respective countries remain competitive in innovation. To create an environment of open and candid discussion, attendance on the Jameel Clinic event was rigorously curated for an audience of 100 participants who debated the enforcement of the Chatham House Rule to offer speakers with anonymity when discussing controversial opinions and arguments ensure without being named as a source.

Rather than hosting an event to generate excitement about AI in healthcare, Jameel Clinic’s goal was to create an area to maintain regulators abreast of the newest advances in AI while also engaging faculty and industry experts to enable latest or different approaches to be proposed for the regulatory framework for AI in healthcare, particularly for using AI in clinical settings and drug development.

The role of AI in medicine is more necessary than ever because the industry grapples with a post-pandemic labor shortage, increased costs (“Not a salary issue, contrary to popular belief,” said one speaker), and high burnout and resignation rates amongst healthcare professionals. One speaker suggested that the priorities for using clinical AI must be more focused on operational tools than on diagnosing and treating patients.

One participant pointed to a “significant lack of education amongst all stakeholders – not only developer communities and healthcare systems, but in addition patients and regulators.” Given that physicians are sometimes the first users of clinical AI tools, some physicians in attendance asked regulators to seek the advice of with them before taking motion.

For the vast majority of AI researchers in attendance, data availability was a key issue. They lamented the dearth of knowledge for his or her AI tools to work effectively.
