But what happened on the bottom?

We’ve been tracking using AI in Australian universities this yr. We made one Survey for the primary half of the yr from 2023. We at the moment are publishing data from the second semester.

More and more students are using AI

Over the course of the yr, we surveyed 154 students and 89 academics about their use of AI in a web-based survey. Of this group, 81 students and 60 academics from Australian universities accomplished the survey within the second half of the yr (June to November).

At the start of the yr, just over half of the scholars had tried or used generative AI. In the second half of the yr, this figure had increased to 82% of scholars, and a few of them used it as a part of university learning (25%) or performance assessment (28%).

In some cases it was suggested or required for exams, but most students used it this manner themselves (85%).

Perhaps because of this of this increased use, students now look like way more confident within the technology than they were initially of the yr. Only 30% of first-year students agreed that generative AI would help them learn, while 67% of second-year students agreed.

Students reported using generative AI in a wide range of ways, including summarizing dense and long texts, generating ideas/brainstorming, or “testing” their very own learning (e.g., by making a quiz on a learning topic ). One student wrote that he was using it

to assist solve problems (it suggests things I might never consider).

Another said it was “one other pair of eyes” to assist them proofread and edit their work.



Students are aware of the constraints

The students also appear to be very aware of the constraints of generative AI. As one respondent wrote:

I find it irresistible (…) when I’m at first of coping with a subject, I find it very helpful. The deeper I delve, the more I actually have to depend on more credible sources of knowledge.

The students all the time recorded problems accurately. These include “AI hallucinations” (when a tool produces nonsense or something false or misleading), biases and specific limitations. Students also noted that generative AI technology continues to be developing skills with regards to solving and reviewing complex math and coding problems.

Since the start of 2023, students have been more confident than academics in regards to the limits of AI (63% students, 39% academics). This trust has only increased amongst students (88%), while there was little change amongst academics (46%).

This is interesting considering the schools encouraging Academics help students understand the constraints of AI.

What are the present problems?

While universities have made efforts to achieve this Providing overarching guidelinesStudents using this technology want more concrete, practical examples of what they will do with it.

In the second semester, few students considered using generative AI in assessment as “cheating” (22% in comparison with 72% in the primary semester). However, many students noted that the foundations surrounding what’s “ethical” and what’s “cheating” are still unclear. A student told us:

I would like to persist with the foundations (…) nevertheless it’s not clear what I can actually do with them.

Scientists in our survey agreed with this sentiment and called on universities to develop clear guidelines for using generative AI.

Both students and academics said they felt some universities had slowed down using generative AI. Those institutions that allowed this felt that the technology was not meaningfully or obviously integrated into teaching and learning. As one academic told us:

They should stop resisting the truth that AI is here to remain. It’s not the longer term, it’s actually the current (…) I just don’t understand why academics underestimate themselves and proceed to be so hostile towards technology.

Students also advised their universities to “embrace it” and “discuss it openly,” noting:

We must work with it since it won’t go away. We can work with AI in a supportive, collaborative relationship.



Will access be the identical?

A growing concern amongst students is the potential of unequal AI competition. Some platforms, including ChatGPT, offer each free and paid models The latter is more advanced.

As a Group of Eight (representing Australia’s top research universities) has noticedThis technology has the potential for “disparities in educational outcomes” depending on who can and can’t afford a subscription.

This is a difficulty that universities must address as they appear to the longer term.
